PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEAs we begin the month of May, we begin our state STAR testing in grades 2-5. Please be sure your child is at school on time each day. Once the tests start students are not allowed to come into the classroom. I know the teachers have done a wonderful job preparing students for this annual test and students are ready to show our community what they know. Encourage your child while not putting added pressure on them. Give them reassurance and confidence that you know they will do their best. Every month seems busy in its own special way but as school begins to wind down May becomes packed with many classroom and school activities. Grade levels and classroom teachers will be doing end-of-the-year activities. Please monitor your child’s newsletter for specific dates and times, so your child can dress appropriately and bring whatever is needed. You might want to assist your child’s classroom during these end-of-the year activities. Please ask your child’s teacher how you can help. Our PTA is sponsoring an art assembly and a Family Art Night on Tuesday, May 21st from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. There will be an artist here who will do activities with students as they draw along with him. It will be a fun night for children and adults. Please put it on your calendar to join us. Curriculum PreviewAs you may be aware, California –along with 45 other states, has adopted new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English Language Arts and mathematics. Students will be assessed on the CCSS beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. AUSD will transition grades Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd to the CCSS beginning in the 2013-14 school year as these grades are not part of the current State Testing and Reporting (STAR) program. This transition will require new English Language Arts curriculum as the current adopted materials are not aligned to the CCSS. These materials are available for preview on May 7th from 3:30 – 5:30 pm in the AUSD Board Room located at 510 G. Street. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions you might have regarding the new materials. Uniform Dress CodeTops: White or teal polo shirts, or any shirt with the Jack London logo.
